In order to successfully carryout repair works on Industrial Electrical Generators, one needs to have a deep insight of how the Mechanical and Electrical subsystems inter-relate. I recently #spearheaded the successful repair of a 1,500kVA Caterpillar Generator at Kagem Mine in Lufwanyama district. The #Kagem_Emerald_Mine in Zambia is the #worlds_largest_producer of emeralds, covering 41 square kilometers in the Ndola Rural Emerald Restricted Area. Responsible for roughly 25% of global commercial emerald production, this open-pit operation is 75% owned by Gemfields and 25% by the Zambian government. We carried out the works from 17/03/2026 to 20/03/2026. The main scope involved changing the "Electrical Alternator" vibrations dampers, and also replacing both the rear and front #crankshaft seals. To do that, we first had to decouple the #Caterpillar_C32_Engine from the Alternator, baring in mind that the Main electrical alternator weighs more than #3500kgs (approximately 3.7 tonnes). It wasn't the easiest of tasks due to the complexity and numerous disassembly and assembly procedures that had to be followed. However, the concepts of team work proved effective yet again, and we were able to successfully complete the works, two (2) days ahead of the planned schedule. A special thanks to both the #Barloworld_Equipment service team and the #Kagem_Engineering_team, who made this task flow seamlessly, and ensured a reduced downtime on this very critical equipment at Kagem Emerald Mine.
